Historical Figures

Jane Addams

Jane Addams was a great leader and helped people all her life. As a child, Jane was very kind to everyone. When she was a young lady, Jane traveled to England. She saw the 'settlement houses' built there to help the poor people.

Upon returning to Chicago in 1899, Jane started the first settlement house in the United States called Hull House. At Hull House, Jane helped immigrants learn English and become U.S. citizens. She took care of the children of working parents.

Jane Addams died in 1935 but the work at the Hull House still continues today.

George Washington Gale Ferris

In 1893 Chicago was the home of the Columbian Exposition, a fair honoring the 400th. anniversary of Columbus's discovery of the New World. The fair was located on the shores of Lake Michigan at the site which is now the Museum of Science and Industry. An engineer, George Washington Gale Ferris, had an idea to build a huge observation wheel. The wheel would have 36 passenger cars, each able to carry 60 people. It would seat l,l40 people on the wheel at one time. People thought Ferris's idea couldn't be done.

Eventually, Ferris did build his wheel. The wheel contained an axle constructed from the largest piece of metal ever made. Ferris's wheel was the largest ever built at that time in history.

Millions of people visited the Exposition. It was a great success and made Chicago world famous. Chicagoans bragged about the Exposition so much that the city became known as the "Windy City".
