Harold Washington was born in Chicago on April 15, 1922.
He attended elementary school in Chicago. His high school years were spent
at DuSable High School, where he was involved in boxing and baseball. He
joined the army and won a World War II victory medal. In college, he studied
political science and received his law degree. He was active in politics
both in Illinois and the United States.
In 1983, Harold Washington became Chicago's first African American mayor. He promised to work for all people no matter what color of skin they had. Washington worked to end racism in Chicago. Racism means that someone is treated unfairly because of the color of their skin. He also helped the poor. Under his leadership, many homes of the poor were improved or rebuilt. He was elected mayor twice, but died in his office at his desk on November 25, 1987. |

Richard J. Daley was born in 1902 in Chicago in a neighborhood
called Bridgeport. Daley went to DePaul University where he studied law.
He became a lawyer in 1933 and became involved in politics. He was elected
to the state House of Representatives and later Daley became an Illinois
state senator.
In 1955, he was elected mayor of Chicago. He was re-elected five more times. He was the mayor of Chicago for 21 years. He served longer than any other Chicago mayor. He was a very strong mayor. Daley liked to call Chicago the "city that works". During his time in office, there were many improvement made in Chicago. He support the construction of the University of Illinois at Chicago campus. Expressways were built, and O'Hare Airport grew in size. Richard J. Daley died in 1976. Years later, his son Richard M. Daley took over the job of mayor that his father once held. |
