Brief Description: Located at vast distances from us and producing huge amounts of energy, most quasars appear star-like, even through large telescopes. Scientists are still probing their mysteries, even after forty years since quasars were first recognized as a new type of celestial object. Astronomers are very interested in how quasars' light levels change with time. Join the hunt for patterns in quasar variability: Choose a candidate quasar from all the quasars captured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), request additional images of your quasar from a telescope in Perth, Australia, and create a plot of the quasar's light output. If your work is approved by a mentor/astronomer you will be invited to submit your findings to an on-line catalogue of data that can be accessed by other astronomers. Brief Description: Located at vast distances and producing more energy than a thousand Milky Way galaxies, quasars appear star-like through all but the largest telescopes. Quasars are now known to be the most luminous of the active galactic nuclei or AGN. Because of their great distances from us, we are unable to directly observe the structure of quasars. Astronomers rely on studies of how quasars' light levels change over time to provide information about where their energy is produced and infer what they might look like. This mini research scenario will introduce participants to using the START Collaboratory tools and resources while creating an online research journals. Astronomy research scenarios are being created for the START Collaboratory, an NSF-funded (STI-0334168) initiative to engage high school students in authentic science research. Brief Description: Throughout the 2008 - 2009 school year students will read books from different categories (genres, themes, cultures) and utilize a variety of technology tools to create analytical book reviews, graphical projects, and statistical analysis of Glen Crest reading trends. They will study authors and write letters. In addition, they will participate in discussions about independent reading books and write reflections.
