Brief Description: Located at vast distances and producing more energy than a thousand Milky Way galaxies, quasars appear star-like through all but the largest telescopes. Quasars are now known to be the most luminous of the active galactic nuclei or AGN. Because of their great distances from us, we are unable to directly observe the structure of quasars. Astronomers rely on studies of how quasars' light levels change over time to provide information about where their energy is produced and infer what they might look like. Join the hunt for patterns in quasar variability: Choose a candidate from all the quasars recorded by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), request additional images from a large telescope and plot the quasar's light curve. If your work is approved by a mentor-astronomer you will be invited to submit your findings to an on-line catalog of data that can be accessed by astronomers. This Astronomy Research Scenario was developed for the START Collaboratory, an NSF-funded (STI-0334168) initiative to engage high school students in authentic science research. It is being further developed for a high school teacher professional development initiative funded by an NSF CI-TEAM Demonstration Project grant (SCI-053746). Brief Description: Located at vast distances and producing more engergy than a thousand Milky Way-sized galaxies, quasars appear star-like through even large telescopes. In the forty years since quasars were first recognized as a new classification of celestial objects, scientists are still probing their mysteries. Astronomers are very interested in how quasars' light levels change with time. Join the hunt for patterns in quasar variability: Choose a candidate from all the quasars captured by the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), request additional images from a large telescope and plot the quasar's light curve. If your work is approved by a mentor/astronomer you will be invited to submit your findings to an on-line catalogue of data that can be accessed by other astronomers. Find Two Numbers

This CI-TEAM research scenario will introduce PAEMST teachers to materials being developed for a teacher professional development program that uses the START Collaboratory to bring cyberinfrastructure databases, tools and resources into the classroom. Astronomy research scenarios are being created for the START Collaboratory, an NSF-funded (STI-0334168) initiative to engage high school students in authentic science research.
