Collaboratory Statistics Banner

There were 580 projects created in the Collaboratory between after July 1, 2003, and June 30, 2004. Many of these projects have artifacts in the resources that are attached to them. Some of these projects have been repeated in the classroom for one or more years. Others are new and have never been used. Some of them were started just to get a feeling for what it would be like to create a project in the Collaboratory.

Brief Description: An understanding of the life cycles of stars is fundamental to at least three of the NSES goals for science education: those dealing with understanding the origin of elements, solar system, and galaxies. One of the best ways to learn about the life cyle of stars is to create an H-R diagram of a star cluster. Hands-On Universe astronomy students will use open star cluster images and HOU image processing software to classify stars by their color. By plotting stars on a relative H-R diagram (apparent magnitude vs. color, students will be able to estimate the distance to the star cluster and its probable age.
