WELCOME

Welcome back to Ms. Rubin's web page.  Look for new updates each month!  Please e-mail me with any suggestions.

WHAT'S NEW?

MATH
We have finished Chapter 1 in Math with great success.  At this point, the students are learning about place value and how to add two and three digit numbers.  Soon, we will continue this concept with subtraction.  Also, the students are reviewing how to round numbers to the nearest ten and to the nearest hundred.  We will continue to work on solving word problems and the major emphasis will be on students showing how they arrived at their answer and why they solved the problem the way that they did.

READING
Our author for the month of October was James Preller.  He is well know for Jigsaw Jones mystery books. In addition to author studies, students will reading in groups.  The groups provide the students for opportunities to get more individual attention and to read at a comfortable reading level.  Also, students are expected to continue reading for 15-20 minutes every night at home.  Every night the students need to fill in their reading log.  The log will be collected and reviewed on Monday mornings.  Students are expected to write about their reaction toward what they have read or feelings that they may have about the book.

WRITING
Students have been writing stories for in class writer's workshop.  After a student has written three stories, they may edit their work, or have a partner look over their work.  Once I have edited their story, the students may publish their story.  In addition, students have started learning the main components of story writing and basic transitions that students need to include within each paragraph.
At this point, students still need to add punctuation and capital letters when they are needed.  Stay tuned for November's class newsletter!  It promises to be as good as the first edition.

SPELLING
The students have been learning more words from their spelling book, in addition to their word wall.  Please remember to check your child's spelling with the word wall at close hand.  If any words from the word wall are misspelled, your child needs to correct it.

SOCIAL STUDIES
Students are still in the process of creating a slide show presentation on the computer which demonstrates their individual place within the world.  It is amazing to see how well each student operates the computer and is able to be so creative with our current technology offered at Oak Terrace!  Our goal is to have these projects completed by conference time.  Stay tuned for an update!
