Poetry:
  • plays with the sounds of word and the rhythms ond phrases. 
  • uses word pictures to build sensory impressions and
  • creates images. 
  • usually compresses ideas; 
  • poetry uses less "space" than prose does to tell about an idea. 
  • uses many different forms and shapes to express
  • thoughts and feelings. 
  • TYPES OF POETRY
    • Rhyming Couplet: simple verse in which the last words rhyme. 
      • I think it's great
      • That you can skate
    • Quatrain: a poem with four lines. The lines may all rhyme or rhyming lines may be offset. 
      • I think it's great
      • I think it's nice,
      • That we can skate
      • Upon the ice
    • Limerick: silly five-line poems with a distinct pattern 
      • I once knew a woman named Kate.
      • Who decided she wanted to skate.
      • She took off ' cross the ice. 
      • And she fell once, then twice,
      • But we think that Katy skates great.
    • Cinquain: five-line poems that are great for building vocabulary. 
      • Snow (subject,noun)
      • Silent,silvery (two adjectives)
      • Falling, whirling, floating (three verbs)
      • Covering the street so white (descriptive phrases)
      • Winter (noun)
    • Haiku: Japanese poertry style consisting of three lines with 5 syllables in the first line, 7 syllables in the second, and 5 in the third. Most haiku are about nature. 
      • Autumn leaves fall down.
      • Billowy piles at my feet.
      • I tumble in them.
    • Shape Poem: format takes on the shape of its subject.
    • Free-form: poems that don't necessarily rhyme or follow a strict pattern.

    Writing Process

    •Brainstorm ideas. Remember poetry doesn't have to be serious. Your poem can be about 

    • something funny,
    • something everyday, 
    • a color 
    • a feeling 
    • a season 
    • a friend 
    • an animal
    •Ask yourself:
    • When people read my poem, how would I like them to feel ?
    • What type of poetry would I like to write?
    •List some poetic phrases that came into your head.

    •Use the Writing Process

    •Prewrite

    •Draft

    •Rewrite

    •Proofread

    •Publish

    *Prewrite

    Brainstorm ideas and decide on a poetic style

    Use graphic organizers like:

    Think about the main idea of the poem. Write it in the first box.

    Combine their thought and ideas into poems. Keep in mind the mood they wish their poems to express.
    *Rewrite
    Set aside the poem and read it later. 
    • How do you like your poem the second time around?
    • Are there words or phrases you would like to change?
    • Are there new ideas you would like to add?
    *Proofread
    Read your poem again and make sure;
    • all words are spelled correctly
    • punctuation is correct
    Exchange your poem with a classmate and check for basic errors.
    *Publish
