NETWORK/INTERNET
FORM CLARIFICATION
We would like to clarify
how we see the Internet being used with your children. It is our belief
here at Oak terrace, that children at the elementary level should never
be randomly
searching the Internet for any reason, including research.
Such activity is both inefficient and potentially dangerous. By using
our homepage, students need not type URL's (addresses) because
of the chance of misspellings. Any website your children visit should be
pre-viewed
and pre-approved
by the teacher.
With
our Home Page, we are able to link to previewed sites.
A student clicks on the links and goes directly to the website.
Many students mistakenly
believe that "everything" is available on the Internet. While there is
much valuable information on there, one has to consider that:
-
There are over 4 billion
unique, publicly accessible websites
-
Only 6% of these have
educational content
-
The average life of a
webpage is 75 days
-
Google, the largest search
engine, has indexed less than 17% of the available pages
-
A great deal of the Internet
is not able to be indexed by traditional search engines, and remains hidden
from them. This is known as the Invisible, or Deep, Web.
-
Anyone can publish
a web page - no-one checks that the information is correct, current or
able to be authenticated
-
And yes, there are unpleasant
sites on the Internet, although these make up less than 1% of all web pages.

The Internet, as you know,
offers a vast assortment of resources. We are carefully considering each
use of the Internet strictly for its educational value. We believe that
children need to learn
responsible behavior and responsible use
of
our resources. The network/Internet permission forms give children the
chance to carefully consider this responsibility and agree to it. If children
abide by their agreements they, and you, should have no reason to fear
inappropriate Internet use.
All of the Oak Terrace
computers will be connected to a computer Network server on which students
and staff can save computer files. This eliminates the use of diskettes,
which break easily, and allows students to access files from any computer.
Use of the network is included in the permission form because there is
potential for students to access other students’ work accidently and we
want students to understand that there is a consequence for misbehavior
on the network. The permission form is the student’s agreement to use the
network responsibly.
Both network and Internet
use are privileges, not rights.
If you have questions
about the use of the Internet or the network, please feel free to call
433-0930 or email Mr. Abrego,
Mr.
Chleboun or
Mrs.
Weiner.
