The Dual Language Immersion Program is an option for any incoming District 112 kindergarten student. The aim of the program is to provide a world class education where children will become bilingual and biliterate in Spanish and English while developing an understanding and an appreciation of all cultures. 

The program's first and second grades will accept new students on a limited basis. Oak Terrace currently has dual language classrooms at Kindergarten, first, second, third, fourth and fifth grades.

For each Kindergarten class, the program enrolls approximately 10 kindergarteners whose first language is English and 10 whose first language is Spanish. Children are taught by a bilingual teacher and a teacher assistant. They experience the same District 112 standards based curriculum as do children in other classrooms. Students learn these subjects in both English and Spanish. 

Students are taught to read and write in their native language, while simultaneously learning second language skills. Beginning reading and writing for English speakers is in English and in Spanish for Spanish speakers. Parents can easily understand homework in this format and may even increase their ability to read and write in a second language along with their child.

Language immersion programs enable children to take full advantage fo the innate ability to learn a second language at an early age. This happens naturally as the children are learning other subjects.

El programa de dos idiomas es una opción para todos los alumnos que van a entrar a Kingergarten. La intención del programa en dos idiomas es proveer una clase de educación mundial donde los niños se transformarán en bilingües y literatos en Español e Inglés mientras desarrollan una comprensión y una apreciación de todas las culturas.

El programa para el primer y el segundo grado aceptará nuevos alumnos en condiciones limitadas. La escuela Oak Terrace tiene clases de Kinder, Primer grado, Segundo grado,Tercer grado,Cuarto grado y Quinto grado.

En cada clase se inscriben 10 alumnos Hispano-hablantes y 10 alumnos Anglo-hablantes. Las clases tienen un/a maestro/a bilingüe y una asistente. Los alumnos experiencian las mismas bases normales del currículo, como los niños en otras salas de clases. Los alumnos aprenden estas materias en ambos, Inglés y Español.

En la clase de Kinder los alumnos aprenden a leer y a escribir primero en su propio idioma. De esta manera las tareas escritas y orales para los que hablan inglés serán en inglés y para los que hablan español, serán en español. Los padres pueden comprender fácilmente este tipo de trabajo aunque esté en un idioma diferente. Y así Ud. también podrá aprender un segundo idioma con él/ella.

El programa de Inmersión en Dos Idiomas, capacita al niño(a) a tomar una completa ventaja de la habilidad innata para aprender un segundo idioma a una edad temprana. Esto sucede naturalmente así como los niños aprenden otras materias.
