Shimer College

Description of Institution
Shimer is a private, four-year liberal arts college founded in 1853. The college uses the Great Books curriculum - all readings are from original or primary sources, rather than textbooks. There are no lectures: all classes are discussion groups of twelve or fewer students, guided by a faculty member. A Shimer education teaches students how to read closely, think analytically, and express their thoughts logically. Shimer graduates enter nearly all professions where reading, understanding, and communicating are important. More than half go on to earn another degree.

The school is committed to self-governance. All policy decisions are debated in the Assembly, where all students, faculty and staff have one vote. Administration is through committees elected by the Assembly, made up of faculty, students, and staff.
