Faculty/staff/student training

The NSHEC Steering Committee, Subcommittees, Coordinator and individual institutions will share responsibility for training in the use of the telecommunications equipment. The Coordinator's office will distribute a schedule of training dates as they become available.

Training offered through NSHEC:

a) Consortium faculty/administrative training

NSHEC faculty workshops will be scheduled prior to each semester/quarter through the Curriculum and Professional Development Subcommittee. These workshops will concentrate on enhancing the quality of teaching techniques suited to the technology rather than manipulation of the equipment. Faculty new to the system may also be invited to attend workshops offered by other institutions or organizations.

Further, as NSHEC is committed to assuring that each institution has the capacity to provide basic maintenance and problem resolution, joint training sessions will be planned as needs are identified regarding specific equipment or problem areas.

Each user must receive instruction on the use of the equipment at the scheduled training sessions or from the room coordinator or technician at her/his home institution. Because this is expensive, sensitive equipment -- although it's quite easy to use once you've received basic instructions -- please don't try to use the room without basic instructions. NSHEC recommends that each institution restrict access until each user has completed basic user training.

Individual institition's training responsibility:

a) Institutional faculty/administrative staff.

It is expected that each institution will assure appropriate training for faculty and administrative staff prior to his/her use of the equipment. This, in most cases, will mean basic training in manipulation of the equipment at the home institution, attending a NSHEC Workshop supplemented by additional sessions and support on the campus.

Faculty/staff training sessions are offered each term by the NSHEC Curriculum and Professional Development Subcommittee for those who will be teaching/utilizing the network. These sessions focus on adaptations needed for effective teaching and learning. Everyone who will use the system is urged to attend a session.

b) Technical staff.

On-going technical training is the responsibility of the institution and may be secured from the vendor or other source at the expense of the institution. The NSHEC network management plan is built upon the assumption that each institution has the expertise in-house to provide basic maintenance and problem resolution. Therefore, this training is particularly important.

c) Student training.

It is requested that the receiving institution have a trained staff person present at the beginning of each semester/quarter or scheduled activity to provide instructions on the operation of the network/equipment for the students/users. This is in addition to opening/closing of the room and assuring that all the equipment is in working order for any scheduled event
