Background and Purpose

The North Suburban Higher Education Consortium is a collaboration among Illinois' colleges, universities and community colleges in Chicago's north and northwest suburbs. The participating institutions are both public and private, two-year and four-year, from specialized local institutions to major comprehensive and research universities. NSHEC was formed in l989.

The Consortium's continuing challenge is to plan, coordinate and expand the availability of quality undergraduate, graduate, and ultimately, continuing education, courses and programs in the underserved and rapidly growing areas of Lake County and north/northwest Cook County. The boundaries of the Consortium are the community college districts of Oakton, William Rainey Harper, and the College of Lake County. The Consortium is committed to developing programs for the region to meet the needs of the diverse institutions in the region as these institutions serve students and faculty.

In l994, the NSHEC Steering Committee began the design, installation and programming of the NSHEC Interactive Video Network with the support of a $1.3 million capital grant from the Illinois Board for Higher Education. In 1995, a second grant of $1.6 million was awarded to support additional sites on the network. The purpose of the network is to extend the goals of the Consortium through a private, two-way interactive video teleconferencing network between the NSHEC institutions. Nine other consortia were funded to develop similar networks.

As of Spring semester, l998, the sites on the network, connected by dedicated T1 lines, include:

A full description of the Tandberg U.S.A, Inc. equipment installed at each site is available from the Consortium office. A schedule of classes offered each term over the NSHEC Interactive Video Network, is included in the Directory of College and University Programs and Degrees in Northern Cook & Lake County from the Consortium office.

In addition, an outside line exists through the NSHEC hub for the Sprint Diamond Network to connect to institutions outside our network in Illinois and across the country.

The use of the network is limited only by our collaborative programming capacity and imagination. The Consortium is committed to developing programs that meet the needs of students, faculty and staff served by the institutions in the region. Such programs include, but are not limited to: courses and programs, faculty/staff training and development, student services, curriculum development, collaborative initiatives, research, meetings and conferences, and expanding linkages between the institutions.
