" And now... for a word

from our students..."

These are some of the written work from students in IMC's Central Region who are attending its adult English as a Second Language Class in Peoria, Illinois. They are learning to write in English for the very first time.

For a class project, students decided to write about their participation in the class and tell the internet world what they think about it. It was a great accomplishment for them -- they wrote every word in English -- for everyone this was a new language experience.

I am Ivan Castaneda. I study in the Illinois Migrant Council. I learn English. My teacher’s name is Lilia Ramirez. I like the principal Letty. I’m happy in the Illinois Migrant Council.

I like study English. It’s one of my favorites languages. I learned citizenship because I like the United States of America history. I’m very happy for study in the Council (“special thanks to my teacher Lilia Ramirez and Mrs. Carmen  Letty Mary and Shannon.”)

...from Susana Juarez
My name is Susana Juarez.

I start to study English in April at the Illinois Migrant Council.  I like my class, my teacher is a nice person, and she has a nice way to teach us.

When we start the class in the mornings we start with vocabulary and I like this because, I know a lot of words.  After this we have grammar, the grammar is very difficult but I like it because I need it to improve my English. Also we have computer classes, we are seven people in the class, my classmates are nice persons too.

...from Areli Aguilar

Hello!   My name is Areli Aguilar.  I’m 18 years old.  I’m from Mexico City.  I study at the Illinois Migrant Council.  My teacher is Lilia Ramirez.  She teaches me vocabulary, grammar, reading, conversation, writing, and translation, and how to speak in English.

I like to learn English and I like how is my teacher with me.  She is very patient with me.  When I have problems Mrs. Ramirez talks with me and helps me.  I enjoy the class because for the first time I found a teacher that likes, her job and helps people to learn.

The school is very nice because the secretaries help me when I need their help. This school is nice and I wouldn’t like to leave the school because here I learned a lot of things.  I like that people who like to learn English come here, because it is a good school and Mrs. Ramirez is very nice with the student’s.

When I will leave this school I want Mrs. Ramirez to be proud of me because I will get a job and speak English like she wants.

...from Luz Casteñeda

Dear Friends:

I’m Luz:

I’m learning English in the Illinois Migrant Council.  I like my class and I like my classmates.  For me is very important to study English because I live in the U.S. and I want to work here, and I know that I need to speak English.

My teacher is a good person, she teaches very good and always has an explanation for every question in class.  In my opinion the teacher is a person that knows her job.  I have three months studying in the council, and I’m happy to be here.

My classmates are very different persons from myself.  But I’m learning from them, and I like talk with them.

Maybe it’s not interesting for you.  But I’m married, and I have a daughter and my relative lives far away from here.  Some day will be proud of me.

I’m sorry for my errors I’m trying to do the best that I can.  And remember I’m learning.

See you.
