   4.  Learning From the Experts

"One of the best things about being an intern here is the residents and the attendings around me. I've never felt nervous about asking for help or guidance."

Christie Reinhard, M.D.
Chief Resident 1998-9
CCCH Resident

Patients and families teach each of us important lessons with every interaction. The resiliency of children, the power of parental love, and the strength of struggling families. They also teach us medicine.

But, they are not the only teachers at CCCH. Every day there are educational opportunities such as Morning Report and Noon Conference which balance didactic knowledge with practical skills. On every rotation, you will interact with experts who have extensive experience in their field of urban medicine.

At County, residents are also teachers. Students from three medical schools rotate through CCCH, and they look to you for teaching and guidance. You have the opportunity and the responsibility to share your knowledge with them.

The Adolescent Medicine faculty members are the principal investigators for a multi-centered study on HIV in adolescents. They provide comprehensive care to adolescents in Chicago Public High Schools and to at-risk youth at the Adolescent and Young Adult Clinic on the hospital campus. Faculty members are excellent resources and role models for residents struggling with how to talk to young people about sensitive issues.

In response to the increasing morbidity of asthma among urban children, Allergy/Immunology has expanded its scope to school-based clinics as well as providing direct patient care at the hospital for both inpatients and outpatients.

Our emphasis on primary care necessitates a large and growing Ambulatory Pediatrics team. The faculty is kept very busy supervising the residents' clinic, providing care to their own patients, expanding into the community and coordinating the Child Development program.

Child Protective Services is a multidisciplinary Division providing consultation for patients suspected of being victims of child abuse/neglect. Through interactions with state agencies and the courts, the physicians provide ongoing advocacy for their patients.

Emergency Medicine provides 24-hour attending supervision in the busiest pediatric emergency room in the city.

Critical Care operates an active transport program and works jointly with our neighbors at Rush Medical College to staff a 12 bed PICU with over 500 admissions annually. With 65-beds and over 900 admissions each year, the NICU is a nationally recognized perinatal center.

The Division of Neonatology oversees the care in this busy unit as well as supervising the care of infants from the many high-risk deliveries seen in Labor and Delivery. They also supervise the high-risk newborn follow-up center using a multi-disciplinary team and home visits.

Hematology /Oncology provides care for a large population of patients with Sickle Cell disease, other hematologic disorders, and oncologic problems of childhood. With innovative programs to provide comprehensive care, peer support groups, and extensive community outreach, they strive to keep their patients in school and out of the hospital.

The Division of Pediatric Cardiology provides state-of-the-art diagnosis and medical and surgical treatment of congenital and acquired heart disease in conjunction with the section of Pediatric Cardiology at Rush Medical College.

Endocrinology cares for one of the largest pediatric diabetic populations in Chicago and provides family education and expert care in busy diabetic and general endocrine clinics.

In elective rotations with Genetics and Metabolism, you have the opportunity to learn cytogenetic techniques, participate in prenatal counseling, and care for patients with birth defects, inborn errors of metabolism, and familial and hereditary disorders.

Infectious Disease education is particularly strong as we see problems at CCCH ranging from common exanthema to unusual and life-threatening infections including tropical diseases and complications of immunodeficiency from cancer therapy and HIV.

All types of problems in Nephrology are managed from routine outpatient evaluation of hypertension, proteinuria, and hematuria, to acute dialysis and management of ESRD through chronic dialysis and transplantation.

Pediatric Gastroenterology provides full service for patients with hepato-biliary, pancreatic, and gastrointestinal diseases. Full diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopic procedures are performed, including therapeutic ERCP.

Equipped with our own pediatric EEG lab, the Division of Neurology fields a multi-disciplinary staff to provide in-house and outpatient management of children with neurologic disorders including epilepsy, headaches, movement disorders, and a variety of neuromuscular disabilities.
