History of Hayt

Hayt School is Named After Lieutenant Stephen K. Hayt (1880-1904)

A Chicago native, Stephen Hayt attended Ravenswood School. He became a Lieutenant of the 58 th Philippine scouts in the U.S. Army. While the Philippine-American War lasted from 1899 to 1902, to the Filipino masses, who saw the war against the Americans as a continuing struggle for independence, the resistance lasted longer. Hayt died at the age of 26, as he led his unit in defending the U.S. occupation of the Philippines.

Rose Hill School Once Stood Where Hayt Stands Today

Rose Hill School sat at the corner of Granville and Clark for 15 years (1989 to 1907). The school was torn down in order to construct the building we see today. Rose Hill had been named after Hiram Roe. Roe, who lived on the hill just north of the Bowmanville neighborhood (just west of Andersonville ), supplied beverages to travelers coming from and going to Chicago. These travelers came to refer to the hill as "Roe's Hill," which eventually transformed into the current name of "Rose Hill."

Name Change

After the Rose Hill School was torn down and rebuilt around1906, they decided after about one year to call the new school the Pope school. However, they quickly changed their minds once again and on June 26, 1907 the school was renamed in honor of Stephen K. Hayt. The building and the name just celebrated 100 years.
