ATTENDANCE POLICY

Regular school attendance is mandatory because:

1.  It contributes to high achievement and academic success.
2.  It contributes to the characteristics of responsible citizenship.

Presentation and discussion of new material occurs during class time.  It cannot easily be made up at home.  Research has revealed that students who miss school regularly find it difficult to be successful academically.  We urge parents to consider this when scheduling dental/doctor appointments and vacations.

Parents play an important role in developing sound attitudes about school attendance and good citizenship and are encouraged to work cooperatively with teachers to positively influence pupil attendance, citizenship, and achievement.

ATTENDANCE PROCEDURES

  • Parents must call the Hayt School office on the first day a student is absent (534-2040).  Upon returning to school, students MUST have a note from the parent giving dates of and reasons for the absence.  If the parent forgets to call, the school will call the home to confirm the reason for the student’s absence.  Your child’s name will be given to the truant officer after three consecutive unreported absences.
The following reasons for absences are valid:
  • A)  Illness
  • B)  Serious illness or death in immediate family
  • C)  Emergency medical or dental attention

CPS Resolution Regarding School Uniform or Dress Code Policy
96-0124-RS6

Whereas, the Chicago School Reform Board of Trustees (the “Board”) and each attendance center has a legitimate goal of eliminating gang related activities at each attendance center and providing the children who attend Chicago Public Schools with a safe environment within which to learn; and

Whereas, the Board and each attendance center has a legitimate goal to instill discipline and create a positive educational environment for the children who attend Chicago Public Schools; and

Whereas, the Board and each attendance center has a legitimate goal of eliminating competition concerning dress and reemphasizing the socioeconomic differences of students to promote a more effective climate for learning; and

Whereas, a student’s dress must not disrupt the educational process, interfere with the maintenance of a positive teaching and learning climate or compromise reasonable standards of health, safety and decency; and

Whereas, the Board encourages implementation of a uniform or dress code policy at all attendance centers in the system as a means of accomplishing the foregoing goals.

Now, therefore, be it hereby resolved by the Chicago School reform Board of Trustees as follows:

Section 1.  Each local school council, which does not currently have a school uniform or dress code policy at its attendance center, should schedule a meeting for parents, staff and community members to discuss a school uniform or dress code policy at its attendance center.

Section 2.  Each attendance center, which does not currently have a school uniform or dress code policy, must implement a school uniform or dress code policy at their attendance center, unless at the local school council determines not to implement such a policy.  The minutes of the local school council meeting at which the school uniform or dress code policy is discussed should be completed and returned to the Chief Executive Officer by April 15, 1996.  For purposes of monitoring implementation of this Resolution, each attendance center shall submit to the Chief Executive Officer its school uniform or dress code policy, or indicate that it has opted not to implement such a policy.

Section 4.   If an attendance center decides to institute a uniform policy and select certain colors for its uniform, there should be latitude in fulfilling the color scheme,  i.e. certain manufacturer’s clothing cannot be required.

Section 5.  If an attendance center decides on a particular uniform, a uniform is to be provided free of cost to each student who cannot afford to purchase one.

Section 6.  An attendance center shall not suspend, expel or otherwise bar a student from attending school for failure to wear a particular uniform.  The Uniform Discipline Code must be followed when a student fails to follow the uniform or dress code policy.

Section 7.  To the extent that any prior resolution or policy of the Board (excluding the Board Rules)  is in conflict with the provisions of this Resolution shall be held invalid, the invalidity of such section, paragraph, clause or provision shall not affect any of the provisions of this Resolution.

Section 8.  This Resolution is effective immediately upon its adoption.

HAYT SCHOOL DRESS CODE

At Hayt School our primary concern is the safety of our students.  Due to the violence that is permeating our city and school system, we find it necessary to “color code” our most precious resources - our children.  In order to continue to keep Hayt School safe, we want our children to wear navy blue pants or skirts, and a white shirt or blouse.  We feel this will distinguish our children from other children in and around Hayt School.  In order to make this a success, we need 100% participation in this program.  Students not wearing the colors described above by the second week of school will be asked to call a parent and be picked up to change clothes before returning to class.  Our goal, as well as yours, is to continue to ensure an environment that is conducive to safety and learning.  Implementation of this plan will help us do just that.  In addition, because we are concerned for the safety of our students and feel strongly that an appropriate appearance sets a positive tone for learning, the following guidelines for student expectations have been established:

  • Appropriate hygiene and appearance are expected.
  • Gang colors or symbols are not permitted on school grounds.
  • Clothing with inappropriate graphics or slogans are not permitted.
  • Earrings and hats are not allowed.
Appropriate school dress is encouraged.  All instructors should be alert to give helpful, friendly guidance without embarrassment.  Extremes in dress, hair style, make-up, or jewelry not in good taste is discouraged.
