      • This site gives information regarding Hermann Hesse’s background.  It explains his early life and how he came to create his first novel.   This link also has the photo we used on our author page.

      • This link gives a profile picture of Hesse working at his desk.  It contains a very brief summary of his works and accomplishment of being a Nobel Prize winner.   The summary given is only about one paragraph long.

      • This gives an excerpt from Hesse’s  “The Steppenwolf.”  It contains three pages of  this story.

      • This gives an outline of Hesse’s life.  It contains  a listing of Hesse’s writings, a brief overview of trips Hesse took in his lifetime, places he lived, schools  he went to and jobs he had.  From this outline, one can briefly look into Hermann Hesse’s life.

      • This site is entitled “My father’s shadow as a pursuer.”  This is written by Michael Limberg and contains valuable information about Hesse’s life.  It describes Hesse’s feelings about his father’s death, comparisons with Freud’s theory, Hesse’s life as a child and family relationships.  It is a two page  article that is worth reading.

      • This link is about Hesse’s  “The Outsider” (a.k.a. “Der Steppenwolf”).  This gives a backround of the book and contains some information about Hermann’s theory of socialism.  This story gives a detailed backround of the story’s main character, Harry Haller.  It explains why Hesse relates to the character and why the character acts the way he does.

      • This link contains a portion of Hesse’s essay, “Happiness.”  It is a three page article that explains Hesse’s ideas of happiness.  It contains examples of happy times from Hesse’s childhood and also gives some backround information.

      • This link gives a couple of brief paragraphs on Hesse.  They tell about his novels: “Demian,”  “Peter Camensind,” and “Siddhartha.”  There is also a list of Hesse’s novels and the year they were published.  This site is a good one to look into if you want a very brief idea of his works.
