I. Social (development) 
    a. Fyodor's parents discouraged nearly all friendships with his co  mrades. 
    b. His parents never allowed their children to wander the streets or town unaccompanied by parents until age 16. 
    c. Fyodor was always quiet, he was very studious and an avid reader.  
  II. Political 
    a. He was imprisoned for the crime of discussing socialist doctrines with a group of friends. 
    b. During the days of his imprisonment he became epileptic. 
     
III. Biographical 
    a. His mother died when he was 16. 
    b. His father was murdered by one of his peasant. 
                1. He was an ill-balanced man. 
                2. He was a suspicious man. 
                3. He tyrannized his family. 
IV. Philosophical 
    a. He grew up with the idealism of Schiller and French Utopian Socialism. 
      1. George Sand and Balzac influenced him and he developed interests in social questions. 
      2. He studied French socialist theories and applied them to life.  
    b. As an interpreter of the human condition, he anticipated the the philosophical movement called existentialism.
    c. He is considered a pioneer in psychological analysis and an important and original thinker. 
V. Religion 
    a. He believed that secular humanism was freedom. 
    b. He has strong religious convictions.  He was a committed Christian and a political conservative.  . 
    c. Nineteenth century Russian writing was based on politics, religion, literature and Philosophy.
