Life in Soil

Remember that soil is made up of various sizes of broken up rock, decomposing organic matter

Among the soil particles, in the small spaces filled with air and water, exists a habitat where millions upon millions of microorganisms live among larger soil residents like the earthworms, insect larvae, plant roots, and pill bugs.  It is a virtual underworld of creatures and plants which many of us may never see unless we go digging and exploring, but which sustains much of the life above ground which we interact with everyday.  As community soil explorers, your mission is to get to know your soil, the underworld of your community!

Looking for Life

In order to compare data results with other students in different communities, everyone needs to be counting organisms in areas of the same size, which are called study plots.

First Choose a spot to sample

Create a quarter square meter quadrat.  A quadrat is a name for the square plot you will be studying.
