Some Indexes and Directories  of Online Information

The WWW Virtual Library
http://www.w3.org/hypertext/DataSources/bySubject/Overview.html
Less hierarchical than Yahoo, this is a listing of topics with cross-references. The Library is distributed, with sections on different subjects maintained by different people all over the world. The pages given differ from Yahoo’s for the same topics.

EINet Galaxy
http://www.einet.net/
Another hierarchical subject directory. Contains different categories from either Yahoo or the Virtual Library; a good complement to Yahoo, it bills itself as being for “professionals.”

World List of W3 Servers
http://vlib.stanford.edu/Servers.html
A geographic directory of WWW servers arranged hierarchically by continent, region, country, and state or territory, with clickable maps for some areas.

Virtual Software Library Front Desk
http://castor.acs.oakland.edu/cgi-bin/vsl-front
Publicly available software. Speed is good, but the search screen is confusing; think carefully when filling it out.

DejaNews Research Service
http://www.dejanews.com/
An index to archived articles from Usenet newsgroups. You can search all newsgroups or create a filter to limit your search by newsgroup, date, or author. See also Infoseek , Alta Vista , and Excite Netsearch for simpler newsgroup searches.

Library of Congress Catalog
http://lcweb.loc.gov/z3950/gateway.html
A forms-based way to search the Library of Congress book catalog. Rather unwieldy and difficult to use—make sure to limit your search as much as possible, since only 10 or 15 records can be retrieved at a time. Helpful for finding out-of-print books that the Amazon.com catalog won’t have.

webCATS - Library Catalogues on the World Wide Web
http://www.lights.com/webcats/
Listings of every on-line library catalog with a World Wide Web interface, organized by geographic location, library automation vendor, and library type.

Bartlett’s Familiar Quotations
http://www.cc.columbia.edu/acis/bartleby/bartlett/
The complete text of the 1901 edition of Bartlett’s Quotations, with author and key word searching.

Britannica On-line
http://www.eb.com:180/
The on-line, searchable version of the Encyclopedia Britannica, along with Merriam-Webster’s Collegiate Dictionary. The index supports natural-language and Boolean searching. You must pay to use this service, but many schools and colleges subscribe to it.

The Internet Movie Database
http://www.moviedatabase.com/
A freely-searchable database of movie information compiled and continually enlarged on the Internet. The database can be searched by title, cast/crew name, character name, genre, and many other characteristics. Includes cast and crew list, plot summary, and much more information for each movie, with a form to let you add information.

Travel Guides
http://wwww.hotwired.com/rough
http://www.lonelyplanet.com/
The Rough Guide, and Lonely Planet are both a series of books written for travelers. Rough Guide is British and Lonely Planet is Australian.

Amazon.com Books
http://www.amazon.com/
A commercial bookstore, but includes a freely searchable catalog of books in print. Includes cross-references from titles to author’s bibliographies. Be careful bookmarking this one—when you enter the site, you automatically get a “shopping cart” number.

Barnes and Noble On-Line
